5 Social Benefits of Forest School
In today’s fast-paced, screen-filled world, it’s easy for children to spend more time looking at devices than connecting with others face-to-face. Yet, social skills (like cooperation, empathy, and communication) are vital for their development and wellbeing.
That’s where Forest School steps in, offering something truly special: an environment where social learning happens naturally, beyond the walls of a classroom.
At Footprints on the Moon, we see firsthand how time spent in the woods strengthens friendships, builds confidence, and helps children learn to work and play together. The social benefits of forest school go far beyond what traditional settings often allow.
1) Learning through shared experiences
One of the most powerful social benefits of Footprints on the Moon is the way children learn together. Building a den, starting a campfire, or creating nature artwork often requires teamwork. These shared tasks naturally encourage cooperation, active listening, and compromise - skills that will serve children in every aspect of life.
In nature, there’s no rush to move on to the next lesson or activity. This slower pace gives children the time to talk, experiment, and problem-solve together, strengthening bonds and creating a genuine sense of community.
2) Building communication skills
Whether they’re explaining how to balance a wobbly stick tower or telling a story around the fire, children at our Forest School have countless opportunities to practice communication. They learn to express their ideas clearly, listen to others, and adapt their words to different situations.
These moments don’t just happen during structured activities - they unfold naturally during play and exploration. The relaxed, open environment helps even the quieter children feel comfortable speaking up.
3) Encouraging empathy and understanding
Spending time in mixed-age groups is another unique aspect of our Forest School. Younger children look up to older ones, who often take on mentoring roles. In turn, older children learn patience, kindness, and the value of helping others. Our Home Ed children often join us for Holiday Club, for example.
The social benefits of Forest School extend beyond peers, too. Caring for plants, animals, and the natural environment fosters empathy and a sense of responsibility. Children begin to see themselves as part of a bigger picture - one where their actions affect others, both human and non-human. Our world will be theirs in no time, and it’s our job to ensure they’re prepared to appreciate and take care of it.
4) Conflict resolution in real time
Conflicts are a natural part of any group setting, but the forest provides a calmer backdrop for working things out. When disagreements arise (usually over who gets to use the hammocks first, or how to divide sticks up fairly!) a Forest School leader can guide children to talk through the problem and find a fair solution.
This hands-on approach to conflict resolution helps children practise patience, negotiation, and respect. Instead of avoiding problems, our educators gently guide them to face them calmly and constructively.
5) Growing confidence through connection
For many children, building relationships in a traditional classroom can feel intimidating. In the open, relaxed atmosphere of Forest School, social barriers often dissolve.
Children have the space to be themselves, to try new things without fear of judgement, and to connect with others over shared adventures! Confidence grows not just from mastering physical challenges, but from feeling valued and accepted as part of the group.
